Google uses CSS for Images

    I knew this is used by Youtube only because youtube being a bandwidth heavy website

    Bit its now the Big G also implemented the same and so probably its time to move on to it and get save server resource. See this

    So it makes loading images much faster for Google also now.

    does this really work without quirks with IE <7?

    Any browser which supports CSS should be and I am sure IE 6 also supports it
