They are php framework. Most companies use Yii framework for php development and others use CodeIgniter. You can learn to develop applications in Yii framework from tutorials.com. Yi framework is used for shorter development, for easily implementing security, for simplifying the process of testing like unit, functional and acceptance tests for your application.
These both are used to build a website in PHP. Both are used for different purpose.
