If a tennis championship is played on a knock-out basis, how many players participate in the tournament if 255 matches are totally played?

we take example of 4 players
since it's a knowck out: he who loses, quits
    a-b = a wins, b loses
    c-d = c wins, d loses

    a-c = a wins, c loses

so in this, 3 matches were played in which 3 players lost and 1 was the winner
OR, no of players = no of matches (= no of losers) + 1 winner
so, 256 players played 255 matches, out of which 255 players lost and 1 was the ultimate winner

Now 256 is right but the person who gave that first did not explain for a day and so finally nimesh is winner. Unless he responds ASAP

I don't know shabbir if you have a memory problem.

The simple explanation is u don,t need to sum it up.since it,s a knock out only 1 person emerges winner finally.so255+1=256is answer.becos after255 matches finally we shud,ve 255losers and 1winner.

And i think that is simple to understand, if not, i can't help, sorry.

As far as I know, he doesn't have :D

I guess out of these 2 lines, the explanation part is : "becos after255 matches finally we shud,ve 255losers and 1winner."
And, I don't consider that an explanation because you have directly concluded things, not "explained" them (see nimesh's answer).

Yeah, it's simple enough to understand, but was it "hard to explain" ??

I think memory problem is something where you said something and I forgot. Did I?

Also if it was this simple you could have done away with just 256 as first entry instead of 128 and then 256.

Explaining the calculation now has little use to the outcome but then good to see your explanation. Better luck next time.

    He wasn't explaining now.
He had already posted that explanation here.

But the question is, if that explanation is acceptable ...

I think that's acceptable, but depends on Shabbir :)

I did not saw that post earlier

no, it's not on the admin, it's on the original poster OP, but since this question was posted by Shabbir, it depends on him.

@Shabbir: Can we have the winner?
This question is of 17th and today is 20th, but no decision as of yet?
