Given an app that's located on the client computer, assuming this computer doesn't have Access or any other Database server/software. Currently, I have a million of records containing ssn in a text file to do the searching for a particular ssn. I'd like to know if there's any other independent database or method that's faster than using the text file. Please let me know.

Database are in most cases faster and more reliable than flat files. Look at Database vs files article for more details
