Somewhere i read that if u stop doing SEO u will drop ur site ranking on search engines. what does it mean. does it mean I need to constantly work on getting backlinks to the website or anything else? Whats a ongoing SEO?

I would not define ongoing SEO as only getting the but also the content and onpage factors. One of the latest think introduce by search engines is canonical URLs which means the same content can have different urls like adding the sort values and other stuff and so you can assign a general url which is the actual url and so to adapt to this you need to be aware of it as well as implement it.

I will say ongoing SEO is to continuously update your content and your backlinks to maintain the higher rankings.
