need some help booting ubuntu

ok so i downloaded ubuntu and i have it as a img file... and i really dont know what to do with it now. i mounted it and when i tryed to open it it sayed that it could be corrupt. so i burned it to a cd anywhay and i put it into my cd drive and reset the computer, pressed f8 (boot menu) and selected my disc drive... then i just opened windows as normal... what the hell and i supposted to do with this ubuntu img file?!
