ok well i have thrown together a little network in my basement and it has two computers on it right now. they are connected via a d-link router one is a desktop the other is my laptop. thing is they can both ping the router but not each other. i get a timeout every time. i have tried connecting my laptop wireless and wired. i have checked all the network setting but nothing looked out of place. any suggestions would be nice. thanks.

Assuming both your computers are on the same subnet then there is a firewall on the destination PC which is blocking the ping.

I had same issue and momentarily block the firewall and see if it works as expected.
