    Hi guys,

So I guess my question is, are any of you self taught and how would you compare someone who is self taught to someone who gets a degree in programming. I have seen some sites where they offer Certification in many languages. Can someone excell at programming by teaching themselves from books and practice? I always thought that just because someone has a degree does not mean that they will know how to do practical stuff. It is what I am concerned about.

I find it really time consuming but have no choice but to study part time through correspondence. Even that is frustrating since there are many subjects I need to study that dont really seem to pertain to programming. I am kind of liking getting into it right away by bying books and studying at tutorial sites.

Thanks in advance for your advice

Degree is a way to start off with the things and then comes the question of how well you can fit yourself in the learning shoes and get moving.

Degree is needed for more than one reason. To get into the job and so that you know how the induftry functions and secondly when you have the job you can experiment on certain business before you settle down into something more concrete.
