As your site grows, invariably you will catch email from other webmasters who are attempting to get you to link to their site. In their efforts, some will brag about how good their Google PR is OR how high is their Alexa Rankings... This is supposed to impress those of us who just fell off the immigrant boat and we're supposed to be amazed and link back to them immediately as we think we just found a great deal. If this were the case, I would reply to every single Nigerian 419 scam as well...
Some facts to set this straight:
To get a good Alexa ranking, all one needs to do is download AND use the Alexa Toolbar and one's ranking will go in the top 100,000 without much further ado. However, Alexa Ranking in and of itself means nothing because Alexa really doesn't get much traffic in the first place and does not affect how your site or anyone else's ranks anywhere else. As an example, my site has an Alexa Ranking of around 242,144 yet gets a million hits/month and runs circles around many sites with 10 times better ranking than mine.
Far as Google PR goes:
"PageRank information is for entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old. If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn't been updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar OR any other tool is NOT the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesn't not have a real PR of zero, the Tool is just out of date"
Hope that sets a few things straight.
