HP Envy 17 3D can be called as a desktop replacement laptop! This 3D view laptop contains of Intel Core i7 processor, powerful ATI graphics, blue ray player etc., so probably this is the best for you if you’re looking to get a laptop in place of your desktop! HP's upscale-feeling Envy 17 3D offers great hardware at a decent price with a great 3D feature. No matter the cost for the laptop is about $1500 but its features are too high! So, you will feel great while using/having this laptop! HP is delivering Envy 17 3D packed with a Blu-ray drive, both HDMI and Display Port outputs, and a USB 3.0 port, the addition of 3D hardware and active-shutter glasses isn't as much fun as it could be. Instead of using Nvidia's well-established 3D Vision platform, HP uses XpanD glasses with the TriDef 3D software. So, you will get the best 3D portability option using HP’s Envy 17 3D.

    Design

HP Envy 17 3D come with a rock-solid taupe chassis made of aluminum and magnesium. A few touches, such as a paisley-esque pattern of raised bumps on the lid and palm rest and HP's glowing logo on the lid, mark this as a premium one. Also Envy 17 3D has a reasonable weight of 7.5 pounds. Also the width is not so much bigger; it’s just 1.5 inches and can be compared with Apple’s Mac Book Pro. The HP Envy 17 3D has a chicklet type keyboard and the number pad stretch across the 16 inch chassis. You can make your typing speed as fast as 94 words per minutes, so the design and the keyboard combination makes this laptop feel like a luxury one! Another appreciable thing is that you don’t have to press the FN key to access the multimedia keys, so you get another great flexibility for accessing media! Here comes the point of touch pad; the touch pad is of size 4.2x2.5 inches. So, this is nearly double as compared to other laptops. Also this touch pad is specially improved from friction, which was an issue in HP’s previous laptops! So, the touch pad works smooth and the integrated touch buttons are also easy to press.

    Performance

Well, performance is the unbeatable point of this laptop. While having a Intel Core i7 processor and 6 GB of RAM, you can imagine how fast is this! HP Envy 17 3D is the first 3D laptop which comes with ATI’s HD 3D technology which is similar to Nvidia’s 3D vision technology. Envy 17 3D comes with a Ultra Bright View Infinity display having 1920x1080 full HD resolution, wide viewing angles, a 72% color gamut and with refresh rate of 120 Hz. Also, the special display adapter makes this laptop sol flexible that you can add up to 3 external display devices at a time!! Well, this is really amazing feature for those who use their laptop for making projections etc.

The blueray device is also works fine while watching High Definition movies, you are able to watch from every side/angle of the screen. The sound quality of this laptop is also great, the speakers are tucked discreetly onto the front lip of the note book and they are powered by Beats audio technology. While listening to music or playing games, I bet that you will be impressed! The Beats audio control panel comes with several good equalizer settings, which makes the audio performance better!

The Envy 17 3D comes armed with a quad-core 1.6-GHz Intel Core i7-720QM processor, 6GB of RAM, a 640GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and 1 GB of video memory, so this makes the laptop’s normal performance so faster. Normal programs like Photoshop, Corel Video Studio loads within few seconds. Also gaming performance is the best as expected from its configuration. Call of Duty Modern Warefare (1 and 2 both), Medal of Honor 2010 works great in this laptop. So, this is also a great option for those who need a portable computer with best gaming experience.

Problems With HP Envy 17 3D

The first and most important problem is battery life. Its only 1.5 hour! Unbelievable but true! So, this may be one point for not choosing the laptop.
Heating is another issue with the laptop, after playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad stayed a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit, but the space between the G and H keys was a very warm 105 degrees, and the middle of the underside was 100 degrees.

The left side of the Envy 17 3D is the real trouble area while using a hi-en program. You can accept a fan that blows 120-degree air. But after playing Call of Duty Modern Warefare 2 for 10 minutes, the left Shift and Caps Lock keys were a blazing 125 degrees. That's disturbing!

    Final Words

No doubt this is the best laptop but the battery life is really bad! Also, the weight is not so small, so while moving with laptop and its accessories you may feel some pain! Hence, it’s up to you that what you want? Good battery life or a good performing 3D laptop!

Well talking about hp, hp has severe heating issues that can't be neglected. I use a pavillion dv6 with 1 GB graphics (ATI). I experienced major heating issues and hard drive reading problems. The above model seem to have more upper modification and such i7 CORE processor wil cause more heating issues.
