how to increase website traffic

I have two websites, one lists important dates and events from world history [ hisdates.com ] and the other is an online collection of popular jokes and quotes [ jokesplusquotes.com ].

I have submitted the site urls to major search engines and directories, but still unable to drive traffic to the sites.

Can anyone please suggest, how to increase the traffic to the sites.

SEO - Read some SEO stuff and implement the same to your website
Blog and Forum commenting - comment of the blogs of your niche

You can get users to do this for you by creating a forum or you can do it yourself by creating a blog. Each time the search engines crawl your site, they will reward you as search engines like new content.

If anyone's interested, I have devised an RSS scraping script in vbs which will poll a configurable list of RSS urls for fresh news items and populate a database with cleansed XML. You can then simply query the latest x articles from this table to keep your content "refreshed".
