Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, i wasnt to sure on where to put this.

I want to learn how to prevent someone hacking into my PC or learning about me. I understand about normal internet personal information. Theirfore i never put any up and so on. But what i want to learn is how do i know when someone is trying to hack me and if they are should i stop them. I know by turning off my power and disconnecting my PC iis a good idea lol but i wanted to learn how to understand how they are getting in and how to stop this. So if there are any articals, programming books (mainly in C++) that anyone can pass on that would be amazing.

    Thanks <3 TriG0rZ

Run a decent firewall that logs when someone is trying to get in, then you'll know. Kerio Personal Firewall has a "trainer" mode where it'll prompt you every time something happens, and it'll learn from your answers what to do next time. Logging's pretty good on Kerio too iirc; I stopped using it a while ago cos you can't use the free one on a PC that is connected to the internet with other PCs connecting through it.

These days I just use Windows Firewall; it seems good enough and works in my configuration.

Kerio blocks inbound and outbound connections so if you've got something nasty on your computer communicating with the outside world, Kerio will let you know about it. Windows firewall is inbound only; it doesn't block any outbound connections.

Well, as far as knowing when someone's trying to get in, the most conventional way to find that out is with a firewall. Zone Alarm's free version is great for getting info like that. It'll let you know every time someone runs a port scan on your computer and give you alerts for similar events. However, nowdays much of the hacking is actually not done by mass port scans looking for 0-days or common exploits, but by "drive-by" malware that is installed on your computer when you surf the web or check email. The best way to protect against that is via a good real-time security suite, such as avast, doing all your browsing through firefox instead of internet explorer, and using a web-based mail client instead of a client-based one such as outlook or thunderbird, etc.
As far as knowing how they get in goes, it's best to get the information from hackers themselves. Hang around these forums, the ones at www.criticalsecurity.net, and similar ones and just observe. Listen in to the conversations, pick up on keywords and google them, ask intelligent questions, etc. Google is your best friend for that, once you find a starting point. I'll give you a few keywords to start you out:
port scan, vulnerabillity exploitation, backdoor/trojan/virus/etc, exploit, network sniffing, fingerprinting, ssh, rdp, brute forcing, password cracking, sam cracking, john the ripper, cain and able, thc hydra, etc. Send me a PM if you have questions.

That used to be the case. However, that's been recently changed on Vista's firewall (I'm not sure about XP's). It now filters outbound traffic also. It's terribly inefficient at it and is mostly just annoying, but it does filter bidirectional traffic.

TriG0rZ, glad we could help. Good luck to you.

Does anyone know of a good firewall or AV that I can use with a server OS? Most of the AVs that I use to use like AVG don't work on a server OS like Windows Server 2008 so I'm looking for an alternate to AVG and a Firewall that will work in Windows Server 2008. Any suggestions?

Norton? Are you actually being serious? Norton is laughed at in the hacker circles and has no respect in the security community. If you're going to use commercial software, at least use McAfee.
Zone Alarm free should work for your firewall. Try avast and adaware 2008 for your av protection.

Avast is also very good. Yes, it has its share of false positives, but that also adds an extra layer of security that protects against mutating viruses that change their signatures so most other av's wouldn't be able to detect them. The false positives are just the price you pay for the extra security.
As far as eset goes, I've never actually used it. It doesn't seem to be very well known, but I didn't see anything off about it.

I didn't say that it's no good, just that I haven't met anyone who's used it, so I can't give you much of an assessment either way.

You should have the option of adding that client to avast's ignore list.

Well, avast has more real-time protection than the free version of adaware 2008, but I usually use them together because I like adaware's scanner better.
