Yahoo Mail still king as Gmail lurks

Google is the Search King. But whose the king of Email? Google? Think again...

“.....ComScore's latest figures for the e-mail market show Yahoo added almost 20 million users last year, growing its share of the market by 22 percent from 87.2 million users to 106.2 million users in June. Only Gmail grew faster--a 46-percent clip--but just 36.9 million people are currently using Gmail. Microsoft's Hotmail is the second-most widely used e-mail with 47.1 million users, up 3 percent from last year.
Some outlets, such as TechCrunch, zeroed in on Google's performance, noting that it has now surpassed Web 1.0 stalwart AOL's steadily falling share of the e-mail market. Others, such as Daring Fireball, noted that Google has better mindshare among the digerati than Yahoo or Hotmail......”

From foe to friend: Kazaa founder turns music piracy crime fighter

So you thought you’ll keep downloading music from the net and nobody can stop you? Think Again....

“....Called Copyrouter, it is technology that detects when a user is trying to download a copyright-infringing version of a song from a peer-to-peer file sharing network, and replaces it with a legitimate – paid – version. The user is asked before the download if they agree to pay for the copyright-protected version through their next monthly ISP bill.....”

CBS to run video ad in magazine this fall

Ever saw Harry Potter movies (or read books) where in newspapers pictures are moving? Who said it can’t happen! Its coming soon
. Yes They are coming out with new concept of ads.

NEW YORK--Broadcast network CBS will be advertising its fall TV season with a video-chip ad embedded in an issue of Entertainment Weekly.
The September 18 issue of the Time Inc.-owned magazine will feature the first video ad to appear in print, George Schweitzer, CBS marketing president, said Wednesday at a press conference at the company's headquarters here.
The ad will be launched in partnership with PepsiCo to promote Pepsi Max soda and the TV network's Monday prime-time lineup. Not everyone will be seeing it: the ad will appear in a magazine insert sent to subscribers in the New York and Los Angeles areas--an edition without the video chip will be sent to subscribers elsewhere and show up on newsstands...”

Rogue Facebook apps steal log-in data, send spam

Do you use facebook’s application a lot? Ever got worried what if it might be used to break into your account? No? Now you should be.

“Security firm Trend Micro warned on Wednesday that a handful of rogue Facebook apps are stealing log-in credentials and spamming victims' friends.
So far, six malicious applications have been identified: "Stream," "Posts," "Your Photos," "Birthday Invitations," "Inbox (1)," "Inbox (2)" according to a blog post by Trend Micro researcher Rik Ferguson.
As of Wednesday afternoon, all of the apps were live except for "Stream," he said in an e-mail......”
Update :- Facebook disables 6 rogue phishing apps, but 5 more appear

Nokia lures rural India with micro-payment scheme

Nokia knows how to click with the Indian community..

“While Nokia's Indian market continues to grow even as pockets shrink in this recession, it has found a new way to reel in even more customers.

India is already Nokia's second biggest market, with 430 million users which represents 60% of India's mobiles. While the demand for high end phones remains the domain of urban India, Nokia has a new lucrative micro-financing scheme which might reign in some of the rural audience too.

The new scheme which has already been tested in Maharashtra, will enable rural customers to pay for their mobile in 25 equal weekly installments of Rs. 100 each. This service is sure to be a boon to many of the customers in the rural market, as now with a small bill of Rs. 400 above their monthly bill, they can get a Nokia mobile......”

    Study: Facebook makes lovers jealous

I always felt this, and Study has proved it to be true.. (and thats why I never use all this :p)

“....You casually slip onto your lover's Facebook page and see that his or her status has been changed from "in a relationship" to "single."
Perhaps you'd had a fight. Perhaps he or she was pressing you for a commitment, a press that you responded to with the wrong words or the wrong tone. Or perhaps you saw that your lover seemed to have a new special friend, one who delighted in commenting on every one of your lover's new photos.
Suddenly, there it all is: love destroyed by a few strokes, not of another's body but rather of a keyboard.....”

Study: Are gamers really overweight and depressed?

This myth has been there for a long time now. Researchers are checking if its actually true..

“The average gamer isn't that 9-year-old child fragging you online, according to a new study by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, and Andrews University. The average gamer, they concluded, looks nothing like that kid.
According to "Health-Risk Correlates of Video-Game Playing Among Adults" (PDF), the result of a 2006 survey of 552 adults living in the Seattle area, the average gamer is 35 years old, overweight, and depressed.
The researchers chose the Seattle area because of its size, diversity, and reputation of having the highest Web usage in the United States....”

    Sony PlayStation 3 Slim - 120GB

    Product Review :-

The good: More affordable $299 price; slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation; all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface; doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player; built-in Wi-Fi; 120GB hard drive; HDMI output with 1080p support; no external power supply; built-in Web browser; free online gaming service.
The bad: Lacks backward support for PS2 games; no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes aren't compatible; online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren't as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they're getting better.
The bottom line: With a smaller design, more energy-efficient operation, lower price tag, and built-in Blu-ray and multimedia capabilities, the PS3 Slim delivers a compelling package for an affordable price.
    Specifications: Product Description: Sony PlayStation 3 - Game console ; Media Type: BD-ROM , CD-ROM , DVD-ROM ; Processor: Cell Broadband Engine ;

Teen becomes first jailed in U.K. for cyberbullying

Think you’ll bully anyone on the net and get away with it? Think again...

“In Worcester Magistrates Court of England, an 18-year-old woman was allegedly sent to three months in a young-offenders institute after being found guilty of posting death threats on Facebook, according to the Daily Mail. It's thought to be the country's first jail sentence for cyberbullying....”

The 10 Stupidest Tech Company Blunders

Even the best make the worst mistakes at times. And we should learn from them. Here’s a list of mistakes that changed the world as it is now...

“Some of the biggest high-tech deals never happened. Some of the most promising products
and services never came to be. Why? Because the people and companies involved didn't realize what they were letting slip through their fingers, or they simply couldn't foresee what would happen afterward.
Change just a few circumstances, and there might not be an Apple or a Microsoft today. Yahoo might be the king of the search hill, with Google lagging behind. You might be reading this on a Xerox-built computer via a CompuServe account while listening to your favorite tunes on a RealPod.....”

Watch out, Google Earth! ISRO launches virtual globe-mapping ‘Bhuvan’

“...To commemorate the 90th birth anniversary of Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday unveiled its most ambitious people-oriented project yet. Bhuvan – Sanskrit for ‘Earth’ – is a remote-sensing 3D image portal that promises to take on the likes of popular virtual globe-mapping applications such as Google Earth and Wikimapia. What’s more, it is technically superior on paper!

The most interested feature for users will be the ability of Bhuvan to zoom far closer than the aerial view from a chopper. While Google Earth restricts zooming to 200 metres and Wikimapia goes up to 50 metres, ISRO’s new technology will be able to render images from up to 10 metres, which means you can easily see details up to a three-floor high building and also add information.....”

Google Apps Script gets green light

This might be a useful thing for future...

“....Google Apps Script works mainly within the Spreadsheets app to automate various processes. For example, users can automate the sending of e-mails based on data held in a spreadsheet, or create scripts that communicate with other Web services.
"Back in May we announced a pilot release of Google Apps Script, and after thousands of hours of use, and lots of valuable feedback, we're excited to launch Google Apps Script to all Google Apps Premier and Education Edition customers today," Google Apps products manager Evin Levey wrote in a blog post Wednesday.
Giving an example of how Apps Script can be used, Levey described an expense approval scenario, in which the script automatically converts foreign currency to local currency, pulls historical exchange rates from external Web services, picks up on missing data, and flags certain expense categories for review.
"Even more useful, the script can figure out whose approvals are needed and automatically request approval from those people," Levey wrote. "And once approved, the script sends a note to the finance department for payment -- all without writing a single e-mail."

FAQ: The ins and outs of DoS attacks

What is this DOS Attack (or DDos)? Attacking the Disk Operating System ? Hehe. No. Curious? Read on...

“...Thursday's denial-of-service attack that knocked Twitter offline for a few hours and affected Facebook, LiveJournal, and Google Sites and Blogger wasn't your average attack.
Typically, someone who has a bone to pick with a specific Web site will round up some hijacked PCs and use them to try to shut the site down. In this case, whoever was responsible was trying to block access to a specific user's accounts and not the sites themselves.
Denial-of-service attacks aren't always straight forward and this one has its own unique twist. Let's take a look at what happened and why.

    What's a denial-of-service attack?
A denial-of-service (DoS) attack is any effort designed to interfere with access to a Web site or Internet service. A common method of attack involves flooding a target server with so many communications requests that legitimate traffic can not get through. This can shut down or slow down the site temporarily.
Web sites aren't the only things that can be targeted in DoS attacks. Unplugging someone's computer is a very basic type of DoS attack.
