Can VB Variables that remain in memory cause system lockups

I am new to VB and am trying to figure out a problem with a program created in VB 6. the program randomly hangs my pc (its running Win NT), but I'm not sure when the hang occures. If I sit there and watch it run it never locks up (like watching water boil!) I was wondering if, since the program hangs the entire PC (have to press the power button to restart), can it be related to memory leaks. I guess what I'm trying to ask is can program variables remain in memory even after their processes have finished, and if so can it cause the pc to lock? (if that makes any sense).

This is driving me nuts

Thanks for any assistance!

Memory leaks can always cause problems and it can even happen to VB6 programs.
