Windows Update Woes!
I am having a dial-up connection at home and I noticed the Windows Update service downloading updates, thereby consuming a big chunk of my valuable bandwidth, I was wondering how could I stop it, I opened the task manager and killed the process named wuauclt.exe but it kept on coming back. I thought of searching for a solution on the Internet, here's what I found.
To stop Updates and remove the icon go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services right click on automatic updates and press stop. The icon should now disapear and the updates should stop bothering.
There's one more problem faced by many of us, that is when Windows Update finishes downloading and installing updates and it asks for a reboot and if you leave the computer unattended it will automatically reboot the system. I even found a solution for that, just a simple registry entry change.
Open Registry Editor, navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU] and the change the value of "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" to a dword value of '00000001'.
I hope this helps many of you.
