Different option for Sending mail using Gmail

My friend said that we can send mails to a gmail ID omitting the '.'. Still it goes to the same person.
Code:

For e.g the real email id is john.1@gmail.com.
Instead of using john.1@gmail.com in the To field he used john1@gmail.com

He said he verified this with his account. When he tried to send using the second email id the mail got landed in his inbox. is it a real feature of gmail or there is some error in this.

This is simple.

You register both the email accounts and then you can add the other one in sending from the first account.

Example
shabbir @ g4ef and shabbir @ shabbir dot in you send me to either and I can reply from the other the same way

Not about making a new email id.

That would never be the case unless both map to same users' id

Could it be possible if my E-mail and ID are different and still I receive the message. For example person 1 use my e-mail, person 2 using my ID in sending....Can I still rcve the message of person 2.?
