I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 with the booting protected by the BIOS password.

Cmos battery removal will do nothing. The password is written to the chip.
I will attempt the "shorting" procedure and post my results

If all fails I will fly a kit into a lighting storm with on end attached to the laptop. Maybe it needs a jolt. where's a power surge when you need one.

i have a serious problem and im not sure where to begin.

let me tell you the background info. My wife (34) passed away with out any warning (Autopsy and toxicology show NOTHING) She was bipolar and had journals on her laptop, out of respect for her i never asked for the pass, i assumed i knew it. I want to get into the laptop so i can figure out why she has passed..who knows if there is any info in there.

So its a dell inspiron 1000 with phoenix bios.

I read through that long post (wonderful post and TY) on ways to crack and tried as many as i could (im a n00b). I cant seem to get anything to work. Could someone help me with this? Im really at a loss...and i want some closure.

Thanks for your time..i really appreciate it

Pete

Re: Basic BIOS password crack

Hi, I am new to the forum. so hello to everyone and all of that. Hopefully this won't sound as annoying as the other 400 "pleease help i don't want to read anything and just want you to tell me the passwd so i can get into my computer!!" . Well I too have been locked out of a laptop, it is a dell inspiron d420. I wouldn't have purchased it if I knew it was going to be this much of a pain in the ***, but that's how EBAY screws us over, right? ANYWAY, my question is.. Who makes Dell BIOS? Dell? I see all of these backdoor passwords and just one mentioned for Dell, which, happens to be "Dell"...ok, well that didn't werk. Oh, and I have the infamous 595B-ending service tag, which means that the latitude.exe password generator won't work. (depending on who's forum you are reading, because I have read that the 'pro$' still use this in conjunction with something else that works..)
What else did i try? I tried removing the cmos battery, yes i did. That did exactly what I thought it would do: reset the bios CONFIGURATION, not the password. So that must mean that the password is located on a seperate chip, no?
everywhere I read, it is always .." but that won't work if you have a d420.."
f*** that !
Any advice that doesn't mention what i have already tried will be appreciated. actually, any response at all will be appreciated, especially the remote possibility that

How to create a password reset disk
Note that this procedure requires one blank, formatted floppy disk.

To create a password reset disk for your local user account, follow these steps:
1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. The Windows Security dialog box appears.
2. Click Change Password. The Change Password dialog box appears.
3. In the Log on to box, click the local computer--for example, click Computer (this computer).
4. Click Backup. The Forgotten Password Wizard starts.
5. On the Welcome to the Forgotten Password Wizard page, click Next.
6. Insert a blank, formatted disk in drive A, and then click Next.
7. In the Current user account password box, type your password, and then click Next. The Forgotten Password Wizard creates the disk.
8. When the progress bar reaches 100 percent complete, click Next, and then click Finish. The Forgotten Password Wizard quits and you return to the Change Password dialog box.
9. Remove and then label the password reset disk. Store the disk in a safe place.
10. In the Change Password dialog box, click Cancel.
11. In the Windows Security dialog box, click Cancel.

How to use a password reset disk
If you forget your password, you can log on to the computer by using a new password that you create by using the Password Reset Wizard and your password reset disk.

To gain access to your local user account on a computer that is a member of a domain, or has been disconnected from a domain, follow these steps:
1. In the Welcome to Windows dialog box, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
2. In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type an incorrect password in the Password box, and then click OK.
3. In the Logon Failed dialog box that appears, click Reset. The Password Reset Wizard starts. You can use the Password Reset Wizard to create a new password for your local user account.
4. On the Welcome to the Password Reset Wizard page, click Next.
5. Insert the password reset disk in drive A, and then click Next.
6. On the Reset the User Account Password page, type a new password in the Type a new password box.
7. Type the same password in the Type the password again to confirm box.
8. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint that will help you remember the password if you forget it.

Note This hint is visible to anyone who tries to log on to the computer by using your user account.
9. Click Next, and then click Finish. The Password Reset Wizard quits and you return to the Log On to Windows dialog box. The password reset disk is automatically updated with the new password information. You do not have to create a new password reset disk.
10. In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type your new password in the Password box.
11. In the Log on to box, click the local computer--for example, click Computer (this computer), and then click OK.
You are logged on to the local computer with your local account information.

Troubleshooting
• You cannot use the password reset disk to reset the password on another computer.

You can use the password reset disk that you create with only the computer where it was created. For example, if you have two Windows XP-based computers with the same user names and passwords, you cannot use a password reset disk that you create on the first computer to reset the password on the second computer.
• You cannot use the password reset disk to reset your domain account password.

You can use the password reset disk only to reset the local computer account password. If you forget your domain account password, contact your system administrator.
• The password reset disk contains sensitive information.

Others may use the password reset disk to gain access to your computer. Make sure that you store this disk in a safe location.

I read a good article about "the paperclip technique" which is supposed to work on the 'Dell latitude d420' ... Now if I could just figure out where that darn chip is located...(thank you Dell, for the sheep-herding ..ahem.."service manual"..pff!), *ok guys, we get the point, you really dont like it when sheep figure out how to 'service' their own laptops*
..I am a programmer, i don't know hardly anything about hardware hacking, so clue me in if you are in the know..

Re: Basic BIOS password crack

I have a gateway MX6433 running XP. I had a password on the BIOS and then decided to remove it.

I entered the OLD password but left the new one blank and hit SAVE.

Now it won't let me log in when booting as it thinks there is a blank password but it won't let me enter blanks, spaces, or "empty" as my password.

Gateway is saying I need to "recover" (which is their word for wipe out) the hard drive, which means losing everything on it.

I tried UNLOCK6 (which works on HP) but it did not provide a usable password.

After trying 3 unsuccessful times to log in it says "SYSTEM DISABLED [00000]".

Can anyone help??

Oh, I also tried removing the battery and power cord and pressing the power button 20 times (recommended by Gateway support), but that did nothing. Now Gateway is saying I have to use the "recovery CD" ($20 charge, and a 3 week wait) to restore my system, but I'm not sure how that can help since the laptop will not boot from a CD right now as it never gets that far into the boot up process.

BIOS password crack

Re: Basic BIOS password crack

Regarding my problem with the Gateway bios, I was able to remove the internal battery that is on the mother board and it fixed the problem. I left the battery out for about 3 hours --- and now it boots fine.

I am just PO'd that Gateway won't accept this as a hardware bug. No system should LET you put in a blank password if blanks are not allowed!

wow....
I've searched this kind of article 4 a long time,
Nice....

I've some questions to ask about BIOS.
1. It concerns about CMOS Battery.
I've changed it,
but the clock in my pc still reset everytime I turn it on.
What is the problem??

2. Is it possible to boot, if I didn't put on the CMOS battery?
I found my Battery was missing,
and it still can boot normally,
but my friend told me that it won't boot if there is no battery?
is it true??
