I see many sites & blog shows tag-cloud. Does it help in SEO or what could be the other reason for it? I don't understand.

When it comes to SEO there is no direct help but it gives more pages to your sites and that can help a little bit. The actual advantage is to get similar blog posts

It helps in seo.The main reason for increasing seo is many post or linked through the keyword for which people are searching.

I think tag clouds are good for SEO, but I wouldn't put the cloud on every page. Tags in general are good for SEO because they are hand edited categorized same as a person edited directory and hence search engines value this. Linking together related pages like Tag Cloud is key to getting indented search listings in Google.
I wouldn't spend much time tagging old content though, maybe just concentrate on keywords you want to rank for.

I've got some ideas up my sleeve on how to make tag pages better for SEO, but I'll let you know more once I build it into a plugin. Stay tuned.

I think the tag clouds can enhance the kewords weight of pages, and increase links in your pages. it is friendly to search engine.

A tag cloud is typically used to depict keyword metadata (tags). There are three main types of tag cloud applications in social software---
1 size represents the number of times that tag has been applied to a single item.
2 more commonly used type, size represents the number of items to which a tag has been applied, as a presentation of each tag's popularity.
3 tags are used as a categorization method for content items.
