As you all know with the launch of Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft unveiled the Office Open XML format in the office suite.Office Open XML (also referred to as OOXML or OpenXML) is a free and open Ecma International standard document format, and a proposed ISO/IEC standard for representing spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. OpenXML was orginally developed by Microsoft, but then it was handed over to ECMA to be developed as an open standard.

OpenXML format being the default format in the Office 2007 suite, we face a lot of compatibility problems while exchanging documents, the although suite comes with a backward compatibility mode which many users are not aware of. Many of you might have received these new formats from clients, colleagues, friends using Office 2003 earlier or OpenOffice type of office packages like me, and didn't know how to view this new format.

There are quite a few solutions for our problem, until we make the switch to the new Office 2007.

Online Converter

http://www.docx2doc.com/ offers a online conversion from DOCX fromat to the old and widely supported DOC format, all you have to do is to upload the DOCX file and enter your email address, the service will then convert your file and send it back to you via email, but there's once catch the free service has a latency of 24 hours, however if you pay the one-time charge of USD 5, you have your files converted in seconds. This is a cool service although people may not prefer it for confidetial documents.

The Microsoft Way

If you have Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier installed just download this[http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en] compatibilty pack from the Microsoft website, this will enable you to open, print edit, and save .docx files in your existing Office installation.

If you are an OpenOffice user or similar, download Microsoft Word Viewer [http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en] and then the above mentioned compatibilty pack, which eanbles you to view, print and convert the DOCX file.


The Word 2007 docx format is currently not supported by GMail Word viewer or Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Hope they come with the solution soon, it's really nice to be able to preview attached word document in GMail.

I have the compatibillity pack. It is good but isn't so good if you are the one sending the file becuase they will still recive a .Docx. Nice tut.

the document wont work if u convert the extension. It opens and displays the file conversion dialog. so can't do in that way.

Compatibility pack is good stuff. I don't think that people want to pay for conversion service.

if you are using office 07 then for convert DOCX To DOC you can use the Save As.. in 97-03 format.
after that you have a copy of your file in DOC format.

I think it's easier to change the format from the Word application itself,
just reopen the document,
then save it as "Word 97-2003 Document".

I think it will works well,
and we don't need xtra payment.

I have downloaded the FileFormaters.exe file, but still can't open a .docx file for my Word 2000.

It supports multiple formats to/from.
And not only documents, it converts audio/video/zip/documents...
