If you have an interest in web programming I would suggest javascript. you can do a lot with it and it is enough c/c++ like to give you a taste... it is also easy and free. The down side is that javascript makes it too easy to develop real bad programming habits.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I noticed that C++ and Javascript were mentioned a lot, and Ruby once. I didn't hear anything about 'Clean' or whatever other newer language I was thinking about when I first posted.
Does this mean that the classics are still the way to go, or just that not too many people have experience with the newer stuff? Is there anybody who's tried any more recent languages that can tell me how they compare?
