I bought this new hard drive so i could back up some files from my laptop and even though i was able to install the drive and USB. for some reason my laptop can't detect the hard drive.

    it says USB 2.0
I know my usb is 1. something. could that be the reason?

    what should I do?

Hehehe, the same problem with me....do this things and it will work.

First, DO NOT PLUG YOUR HD TO YOUR LAPPY.

Power up your HD....and wait for 1 min.

Now Plug it in ;) It will work.
