I would says it is mostly used for sites that sell lots of different products. You link to your internal page or the exact product page. Usually link with the product keyword, due to the fact that the internal page has more relevant info on the product, than your homepage, and the products name mentioned a lot, it's easier to rank for the current keyword/ product in search engines.
