What would one need to do in order to access the windows registry?

Is this a ridiculously complex operation??

Does C or C++ even have the ability to do this directly?

    Thanks

Sure. See MSDN with an appropriate search term. Registry additions, deletions, and modifications are a very common thing. The paths to the contents are very file-system-like. As a matter of fact, the registry is really just a set of files (a single file in older versions).
