    Hello All

about:blank opens a webpage rather than a blank page

This is the problem faced by many who use net and has about:blank as there home page or even if they have different home page its chage to about:blank with opening a page and normally of Search engine.

    Remedies
You start the browser and keep an eye on status bar it will refer to some dll that is opened. If you have very fast machine it will just remain there for a blink of an eye and so what you do is run a program with an infinite loop and then start the browser and you will be able to see the name of the dll. If you cannot see try more than once. After seeing the dll delete the dll from the pc as well as from recycle bin and you will see you have gained your about:blank page back.

You get this type of dll if you are in Search of some cracks and visits sites that provide this type of cracks but I am not sure which site exactly.

    Thanks

    a beginner's post i should say.
it happens because of spywares which generally comes in forms of exe's or dll's and they exploit weak 'iexplorer'.
the common form is an(or multiple) entry(s) in registry which activate the dll's or exe's once ie is started.
'viewing the statusbar' is a very lame method.

to get rid of such spywares :
go to www.lavasoft.de and download their software 'Ad-aware'.

to learn more about spywares :
go to www.informit.com and search the article archives for spyware articles.

I would say using 3rd party software is beginners work and doing it yourself is what should be done. What spyware does if you can figure out how would be better option.

After you have found the dll you may sometime unable to delete it. What you do is reboot the machine and without starting ie for the first time try deleting the dll. If this fails use safemode to delete the dll.

Also as a precaution try searching for the same dll name if its present as a second copy on your pc.

    Thanks

It seems to me you like 'jump up the tree without climbing the branches'. Not a particularly good attitude. Get 'Ad-aware', it gives details about spywares. Read them and then figure out how they work. Also read the articles at informit.
Ofcourse the best possible prevention is not to use IE at all. ;-)

You can always write a batch file to delete the target file no questions asked. This process is easily available via search engine.

So, it is still on here as reference, therefore if someone reads it they now know to read further into writing their own files to work for them. I am new to the forum and this is one of the posts I read within the first 15 minutes or so. How many more people do you think see this on a daily basis?

That about:blank you can also use about:config and change the way the server acts towards the website such as use a proxy via make the server think its another website connecting to u or change cookies and gain admin access but i wont explain that for security purposes

    :)
