If a tennis championship is played on a knock-out basis, how many players participate in the tournament if 255 matches are totally played?

we take example of 4 players
since it's a knowck out: he who loses, quits a-b = a wins, b loses c-d = c wins, d loses a-c = a wins, c loses so in this, 3 matches were played in which 3 players lost and 1 was the winner OR, no of players = no of matches (= no of losers) + 1 winner so, 256 players played 255 matches, out of which 255 players lost and 1 was the ultimate winner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-...ion_tournament |
