Ah, but if he says he is telling a lie then he is lying about whether or not he's lying. It's a paradox, you see. In fact, nobody can say "This is a lie" (or "I'm lying", or "This statement is false", or any other variation) because the statement is self-contradictory: if it's a lie and therefore true then it's not a lie, but if it's not a lie then it's true and must therefore be a lie. Which makes no sense.
